Hair loss in women can in some cases be due to genetic factors. This is referred to as Androgenic Alopecia (or Female Pattern Hair Loss - FPHL), and can occur from puberty onwards.

Up to 50% of women will be affected by hair loss due to genetic factors during their lifetime.

Hair loss in women can also be caused by a number of other factors including the following;

   Hormonal imbalances
   Hormonal changes such as menopause
   Pregnancy & childbirth
   Dietary deficiencies
   Stress
   Illness
   Dermatologic conditions
   Medications e.g. anti-cancer drugs
   Hair styling & chemical hair processing
   Trauma
