Hair shaft disorders
Damage from colouring, chemical or straightening
Trichology is a branch of medicine dedicated to the health and condition of hair and scalp. This includes hair loss, scalp conditions, and Male Pattern Baldness & Female Pattern Baldness. Extensive training on hair loss and scalp conditions with The International Association of Trichologists (IAT) is required to become a Trichologist. There is also a strict set of ethical guidelines they must adhere to. It is necessary for them to keep up with their knowledge by conducting regular research, studying, and attending conferences.
Founded in 1974, the IAT is a non-profit dedicated to advancing the study, research, and practice of hair and scalp health and disease. The International Association of Trichologists also sets standards, certifies students, and publishes educational materials.
The first step of a consultation with a trichologist is completing a questionnaire that asks about your medical history, family history, and nutritional/lifestyle choices. The trichologist may take samples of the hair and scalp after examining it physically. The samples will be observed through a microscope or sent for mineral analysis.
Once the underlying cause has been determined, a tailored treatment plan can be put into place. Photos will be taken at different intervals to document the changes in your hair and/or scalp as treatment progresses. In some cases, you may be referred to your family doctor or a dermatologist for further treatment and/or blood tests.
Trichologists are especially interested in how nutrition can play a role in hair and scalp conditions. They also pay close attention to the endocrine, immune, nervous, circulatory and digestive systems, as these are all vital to the health of your hair and scalp.
A correct diagnosis is the first step to resolving hair loss. Only professional trichologists and dermatologists are able to give you an accurate diagnosis and prescribe the best possible treatment for your situation.
