Our physicians are often called on for their expertise in transplanting hair into scarred areas of the scalp. Our physician has been providing healing treatment to patients in Australia who have been scarred in hair-bearing areas due to fire, car accidents, or other trauma.
Our Doctors, who have restored hair for patients with burn or other types of scars, transplanting a full thickness graft into the scarred area can help recondition and regenerate the scar.
Thanks to our highly refined surgical techniques, patients are able to regrow hair on the scarred areas of their scalp while also reconditioning and healing any wounds incurred through trauma. This is also relevant for beard implants and eyebrow implants too.
Richard is one of many patients with a remarkable healing story. In 2007, Richard was in a near fatal car accident that resulted in a brain injury. This brain injury caused him to have partial loss of vision, epilepsy, changes to his personality, and difficulties walking and talking.
In addition, the severe scarring on his scalp caused hair loss on one side of his head.
The plasterer, who at 22 built a business that employed five people, has been on a long and courageous road to recovery since then. He no longer works, but with the love and support of his family, Richard has made remarkable progress with his health and wellbeing and now lives independently near his Mother’s home.
His mother, Sarah, who lost her husband in 2010, says that along with fighting a range of debilitating conditions caused by the accident, her son also felt embarrassed by the scarring and baldness on one side of his head. Richard would only leave the house on rare occasions, and hats were always his companions.
After taking her son to a hair transplant consultation, she was informed of Dr Martinick’s surgical skills in hair growth and healing scars in areas with hair. Richard had a successful hair transplant in 2012 and followed up with a second procedure in 2015.
Naturally I was nervous about the procedure for my son,” Sarah said.
“Dr Martinick and her team were just lovely with him. It has made such a difference to his life and how he feels about himself.
“It is beautiful to see the change in him.”
Not only did the hair transplant help Richard to regain his normal physical appearance, but it also boosted his emotional wellbeing. Richard was understandably self-conscious about the scars on his scalp and led a reclusive life before having a successful hair transplant. Nowadays, he has an active social life, has met his girlfriend and formed a lasting relationship.
Transplanting a donor graft into a scar, as was the case with Richard, can recondition and heal the scar. Dr Martinick explains that by injuring a scar with the right stimulus, such as transplanting a full thickness donor graft of hair, you can make it more embryonic and give it a second chance at life.
“The scalp hair between the oil gland – sebaceous gland and arrector pili muscle – is rich in stem cells which influence the traumatised scar tissue into making skin components resulting in revascularisation and increased blood flow.
“To put it simply, the positive results of this are that the stem cells turn into whatever tissue is needed to heal the scar. It is so rewarding to witness this healing for the patient.”

Different types of scarring will produce different results from hair transplants. Thick scars can be variable in the amount of hair growing after transplant because of the lack of blood flow, while thinner papery scars respond better to the surgery.
The doctor usually places the grafts further apart and suggests undergoing more than one session of transplantation in order to create cosmetic density.
When hair growth occurs in a scar, it has been noted that the scar returns to a more regular architecture in colour, vasculature and thickness.
When transplanting hairs into a scarred area, it is best to choose hairs of a similar diameter to those already surrounding the scar. To achieve a more natural-looking outcome, an experienced doctor will observe the existing hair’s flow and direction, then replicate density, curl and angulation.
Rejection of donor hair is more likely to occur if the recipient sites are not made deeply enough and/or if there is significant post-operative inflammation during the first three days after transplantation, as this can result in newly transplanted follicles being strangled.
An experienced doctor will be able to create a natural look when covering scars with donor hair due to their understanding of the details of artistry required.
