Mesotherapy Vs PRP

There is a lot of confusion about the difference between PRP and Mesotherapy. Mesotherapy treatment Perth involves the administration of superficial injections. They usually contain diluted drugs such as minoxidil, vitamins, nutrients and growth factors. While PRP treatment involves injecting platelet-rich plasma derived from an analogous blood sample into the affected areas of the scalp. What are the main points of difference in treating hair loss with Mesotherapy vs PRP?

1. There is more research available on the safety and efficacy of PRP than Mesotherapy. Though mesotherapy has been around since 1970, there is still insufficient scientific data related to its potency. Leading dermatologists consider PRP to be a lot more effective treatment than mesotherapy for tackling hair loss.

2. PRP is a less time-consuming and relatively more affordable hair regrowth treatment than mesotherapy.

3. PRP is extremely safe with no side effects as it uses the platelets derived from the client in the procedure. On the other hand, mesotherapy uses customised injections containing various ingredients, which may cause some side effects.

4. Many trichologists suggest PRP treatment along with hair transplant procedures to achieve optimal results. However, they rule out mesotherapy.

Often we are asked about our non-surgical treatment options for Hair Loss. Do they really work? Will it work for me?

While the treatment PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) has been around for decades, its benefits have often been associated with solely skin-based treatments. Now studies have presented excellent data to show its benefits exceed just the skin, now these ‘golden serums’ benefits have added treating hair rejuvenation to its growing list of accomplishments. If you are concerned with thinning hair, hair loss or condition, you may just want to keep reading on.

What is PRP?

To put it simply PRP is an injectable treatment using your own blood to create an ultra-concentrated serum rich in powerful growth factors and proteins that help the body heal and repair itself. The process of obtaining PRP serum involves a blood draw and a centrifuge. To yield PRP, blood is drawn from your arm and then spun down in a centrifuge (a machine that spins at high speeds to help separate blood components). After centrifuging, it separates into three distinct layers: plasma on top, platelets and blood cells in the middle, and red blood cells at the bottom. PRP is derived from the centre part, also known as the “serum portion”

In some cases, a second spin is performed to increase the platelet concentration of the plasma. Once this PRP serum is obtained it is spread all over your area of concern, to rejuvenate your hair growth cycle.

It sounds scary, we know, but trust us it’s not – unless you get squeamish at the sight of your own blood. Though the entire process is relatively quick, usually only 30 minutes, it actually boasts impressive, virtually painless and non-invasive results.

What are the results?

PRP is valuable and useful for many reasons. First, it triggers natural hair growth and maintains it by increasing the blood supply to the hair follicle and increasing the thickness of the hair shaft. Because of this, if anyone worries about thinning hair or suffering from Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA), the benefits of treatment can be huge.

Secondly, the PRP used during any treatment is derived from the patient, giving them a revved-up dose of their body’s natural healing ability. This takes us to our next point.

Is it safe?

When performed in a clinical setting with appropriate infection control policies and trained Nurses and Doctors; Mesotherapy or PRP is a relatively low-risk procedure. While there is always some level of risk with any skin procedure, significant side effects associated with PRP facials are very rare. This is because PRP is tailored to you since it’s made using your own blood — so there is no risk of an allergic reaction or your body trying to reject the plasma. It’s a safe, effective, and holistic way to brighten, smooth, and nourish your skin. However, if you have a history of blood diseases, including clotting or bleeding disorders, you should avoid PRP treatment. Still not sure if it’s for you? Don’t worry, before booking a PRP treatment you will be required to have a complimentary consultation with one of our highly trained nurses or doctors. In this consultation, you will be assessed for eligibility for treatment as well as any associated risks and advised on aftercare.

Curious about the aftercare?

There is usually some tenderness and swelling but, for many patients, this fades by the end of the day or the day following the treatment. You can go right back to work or your other activities without limitations.

Results are generally visible at three weeks and continue to improve gradually over the next three to six months. Generally, three to four initial treatments are advised, however, more may be indicated for some individuals. Current data shows results may last 18-24 months. Once your results are achieved maintenance treatments may be required to maintain your results.

The best part is PRP can be applied in addition to a range of many other treatments to enhance results for both. For anyone who has had a hair transplant already this is for you.

Hair transplant with PRP treatment

PRP contains essential proteins that help stimulate and encourage hair growth. It is combined with transplant treatments to help promote and encourage tissue repair. The treatment helps to preserve and enhance the hair follicles pre-and post-transplant and to produce more robust hair growth.

Platelet-rich plasma is concentrated blood plasma that contains approximately five times the number of platelets found in normal circulating blood. Higher levels of platelets allow more naturally occurring growth factors to circulate through the balding area.

The growth factors in PRP facilitate faster wound healing and reduce scar formation post-hair transplant. This helps to ensure the tissue around the area is restored naturally.
A high concentration of your blood platelets stimulates stem cells and increases the production of collagen, nutrients, and antioxidants. By activating follicular progenitor cells (adult stem cells) the application of PRP causes weak hair follicles to become healthier and larger, therefore, gaining thicker hair growth.

More than a Bloody Myth

So while the buzzword PRP has been around for a while, endorsed even by many A-List celebrities, its popularity is not just hype. Early clinical data and positive patient reports indicate a strong future for PRP therapy. While the treatment was first developed in the 1970s to aid with wound healing and blood loss, it was first utilised in 1987 during a heart operation in Italy. It is now being used successfully in specialist treatment areas such as rheumatology, dentistry, orthopaedics, and plastic surgery, including Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA).
