The Link between Hair Loss and Protein Deficiency

There are many factors that can lead to hair loss problems, including a poor diet. It’s important to make sure you’re getting plenty of protein as part of a balanced diet, as this is one of the crucial building blocks of your hair.

Protein Needs

The body needs protein for a variety of tasks; if it doesn’t receive enough it will ration what it has, cutting off supply to what it deems ‘non-essential duties’. Typically, the hair follicles will miss out.

Eating a healthy and balanced diet will naturally give people enough protein in their diet to ensure they have enough to feed their hair growth. For women, it’s recommended to aim for 46g of protein a day, and for men around 56g, however this may vary depending on individual circumstances. It’s more important to get the right amount of protein, rather than too much.

Sources of Protein

Generally, you’ll notice hair loss two or three months after a drop in protein, as hair growth goes in cycles. Luckily, the effects are reversible. If you think that a lack of protein may be playing a part in your hair loss, be sure to include meat, nuts, grains and dairy products in your diet.

Other Dietary Factors

As well as protein, low levels of iron can lead to hair loss. Malnutrition caused by eating disorders or general weight loss can also cause hair loss problems.
