Why Clinics Don’t Tell You About Hair Transplants Gone Wrong

When you view a hair transplant clinic‘s website or social media, you will likely come across pictures of patients who have a full head of newly implanted hair. This is the side of the hair transplant industry that these clinics want prospective patients to see.

However in many cases, it’s a totally inaccurate representation. Let alone the actual hair growth 8 to 12 months post-surgery.

This portrayal of hair transplants by sales teams is idyllic, but not always accurate. Their aim is to get people who are despairing about their hair loss to spend money on treatments that won’t necessarily leave them with a natural looking head of hair. Other times scare stories of overseas hair transplants can be spread.

What does a 99% success rate really mean?

Some hair restoration clinics claim to have a 99% success rate, but this is based on a very broad definition of success. For example, simply having the transplanted hair remain on the scalp is considered a success, regardless of how it looks.

Patients, on the other hand, will most likely define a successful hair transplant as a procedure that leaves them with natural looking hair that boosts their self-confidence. And it’s clear that, for some surgeons, nowhere near 99% of their hair transplant procedures achieve that.

You can still get a good hair transplant

There are many skilled practitioners who take pride in their work and carefully choose the right look for their patients with the hair transplants they perform. The result will depend on the skill and experience of a competent physician with an aesthetic eye. You must have come across other treated patients and you did not notice anything as the result was totally undetectable and natural.

Unfortunately, the exemplary work of some physicians is often over shadowed by the work of less scrupulous physicians who are more interested in finances than follicles. They care little about the patients they leave looking terrible after a botched hair transplant. As far as these clinics are concerned, they’ve done their job, given the patient more hair, now onto the next scalp.

Every good side has a bad side

Hair transplants are a pretty common and safe procedure these days. Even though hair transplants have come a long way with advances in treatment and technology, there are still plenty of bad hair transplants out there.

They are very real and very damaging to the patients who are unfortunate enough to receive them. And often, they are irreversible. What you will have on your head, you will keep all your life”, says Dr Jennifer Martinick.

But admitting to failures is—unsurprisingly—missing from the websites and promotional material that the less trustworthy clinics use to lure people into having a transplant. All prospective patients see is the good side, with the bad side literally brushed out of the picture.

It’s unfortunate that making money is the main goal of these clinics, with making patients happy being a secondary concern. The results are often hair transplants that look unnatural and fake!

Why? “Because you will only notice a bad hair transplant. Surgeons who care about their patients know that a good hair transplant has a natural result without it being obvious that the patient has had a transplant at all,” says Dr Martinick.

Choose a hair transplant clinic with care

At New Hair Clinic, we are a medical hair restoration clinic practising only medically approved solutions for hair loss problems. In medicine, there are ethics, moral principles, and values that govern professional conduct. The Australian Medical Board ensures that doctors are regulated by strict constraints, tight boundaries and adherence to regulations are applied at all times.

These guidelines do not apply to non-medical clinics. Clinic owners, consultants, educators, and salesmen who do not provide medical services can make promises without accepting accountability. There are many fringe operators who manage to dispense misinformation, pushing the boundaries of truth to the extremes. They employ many ways to go around the trickery such as fake before and after photos, made up reviews or testimonials, and promoting FUE overseas like a hair transplant in Turkey.

Before making the decision to get a hair transplant, it is important that you first do your own research. Look into finding a reputable surgeon who is willing to answer any questions that you may have. A good clinic should not have any problem discussing their work with you. If they are unwilling to talk about such things, then they may be hiding something.

Nevertheless, be reassured that there are surgeons who are ready to help you along with professional expertise and right treatment techniques that maximise the chances of you ending up with great results.
